Yesterday, my three sons and I went to do one of our favorite frugal activities – we went to the beach. My husband dropped us off, as he had to go to work, and since we expected the water to be wavy, we had left a lot of our beach gear at home.

The first thing my eight-year-old son exclaimed was “Oh, it is so calm!” He was right, the water was calm and absolutely beautiful. While we have had several beach trips in September, we have not been able to go swimming due to the waves, so this was a very welcome change.

My fourteen-month-old baby boy was thrilled to finally be able to play in the water, and he had a blast with the waves coming up and catching his feet.

He also spent quite some time playing with his shadow.

My four-year-old spent a lot of time in the water, but when he was in the sand he made a great attempt at building a sandcastle.

My eight-year-old son also spent a lot of time in the water practicing his swimming, but he also built a volcano.

Now, you might wonder what I did while the boys dug in the sand. I spent a lot of time in the water, because it was fabulous. I also tried figuring out how to take photographs with my new SLR camera and lenses.

After a few hours at the beach, not even sunscreen, sunhats or sun umbrellas were enough to shield us from the sun, so it was time to pack up and head home.

It was shower time, and getting sand and seashells out of my little one’s curls sure isn’t easy.

Going to the beach is one of my family’s favorite frugal ways to spend the day.

What’s your family’s favorite frugal activity?
