My family does not eat much sea food, and to tell you the truth the cost has a lot to do with it. On rare occasions my husband will cook his Jamaican fish dish, or I will cook salmon or breaded tilapia but that is about it. My family had never tried Gorton’s Seafood, so when we got the chance to try out several varieties, we were very excited. Yesterday, Gorton’s Seafood filled up our dinner table, and a miracle happened.

On the way home from the store, I made an agreement with my oldest son that we would not mention anything about what we were having for dinner to his younger five-year-old brother. Why the conspiracy, you may wonder… Well, out of three sons, I have one extremely picky son. I have tried every trick in the book, but the the truth is that he just has extremely sensitive taste buds. He does not get it from strangers though, as I am very picky myself. In fact, growing up I only ate meat, whenever I was forced to, and even then I did everything I could to escape, including feeding the dog under the table, hiding food in the trash etc. At the age of 16 I became a vegetarian, and at 17 my mother finally agreed to stop giving me a difficult time about eating meat – I have not eaten meat since.
So while I use every trick in the book to get my son to eat healthy (including making sneaky foods such as meatballs with hidden veggies), I also understand his pickiness. My five-year-old says “I don’t eat meat, only hotdogs and meatballs”, so I knew that announcing dinner would be fish or seafood would not do any good. Instead we all kept quite about the actual content of dinner, and amazingly it worked.
I purchased three different varieties of Gorton’s Seafood thanks to a combination of coupons from Gorton’s and a great Gorton’s sale at Publix. I lined the Gorton’s Seafood varieties up on the table, and then I let each boy choose what he wanted for dinner. The kids saw the breaded shrimp and fish sticks, and they were excited. My picky five-year-old son declared “I want the cheese stick and the chicken nuggets”…..I did not say anything – I just nodded in approval.

The Butterfly Shrimp and the Tilapia Fish Sticks had been chosen, and cooking them were extremely easy. 20 minutes in the oven at 425 degrees Farenheit, and making sure to turn the fish sticks and butterfly shrimp halfway through.

I made some rice, beans and corn as a side, and I was amazed to see how excited all three boys were about this new, interesting and very different dinner. I made each of them their own plate, still silent about the content, and then I took a deep breath.

The Taste Test and Reactions:

My 19-month-old son was a bit hesitant about his Tilapia fish stick at first, but it grew on him, and the Tilapia fish stick eventually disappeared together with the rice and beans.
My skinny eight-year-old son, who can eat a bag of apples in a day if I let him, went for both seconds and thirds.
My five-year-old’s reaction to Gorton’s Seafood:  I did not say a word, but I was screaming Hallelujah! on the inside, as I watched Mr. pickiness eat up everything on his plate. Everything! No forcing him, no bribes, no promises of treats later on.
My husband had asked for the Shrimp Scampi, and while he was eating his dinner, my five-year-old son asked for him to share…SHARE! Since my son was now done with his own dinner, I asked him if he liked it, and yes he sure did. I asked him what he was eating….”Sushi!” he exclaimed, before he continued on telling us about how the Chinese eat Sushi.
Oh my, I have to say it – it is a miracle! Thank you Gorton’s Seafood, you made a miracle happen at our dinner table, and I now have a fish eating five-year-old son.
Gorton’s Shrimp Scampi
Cooking the Shrimp Scampi was also extremely easy, but I have to say that I was a bit shocked to see how little was actually in the box…especially for the regular cost of $7.49. Now, I know that South Florida food prices can be crazy at times, but after cooking the Shrimp Scampi, I will say that I was one stunned frugal mom. The below photo shows 3 servings according to the package, but we did not put all of the sauce on.

Price aside, my husband liked Gorton’s Shrimp Scampi, and he could easily have eaten three portions of the Shrimp Scampi. However, that would have been $22.47, so he will definitely never get to eat three portions at regular price. My husband said he would have liked more shrimp and less sauce, but the taste was great.
My family’s first experience with Gorton’s Seafood has been extremely positive, and this will definitely not be the last time Gorton’s Seafood will find its place at our dinner table.
While I think the regular price is quite high on certain of the Gorton’s Seafood products, it is possible to get a great deal if you combine sales with coupons. The high price of Gorton’s comes with great quality and convenience, and I was quite impressed with the quality of every product my family tried.
