I had 15 Borders Bucks from Erewards that I needed to use by the end of month, and since our local Borders stores had already closed down a while ago, and I thought Borders had already closed down in Fort Lauderdale, I decided to try using them online. I have bought online in the past, but I have always been able to ship to the local Borders store for free, which is no longer an option. Shipping price $4.95! I almost hit check out, but then I decided to give one of the former Borders stores a call, and someone actually answered.
The Borders employee confirmed that they were still at their Sunrise, Florida location, but that she did not know for how long. Since the kids were off from school, we made a shopping and playing day trip out of my Borders stop.
When we got to the Borders store, there was a sign on the door with lots of exclusions, including no Borders coupons. Amazingly, I did not have any Borders coupons with me, as I was not planning on buying anything at full price. I did have the 15 Borders Bucks from Erewards, but I asked, and they still accepted them.
There were lots of books left, but there were also many empty shelves, and I could only locate English/German dictionaries. I was hoping to get a small dictionary for my son. I was also looking for Nicolas Sparks books, but they only had a few copies of Dear John left. The kids books were overpriced in my opinion at 50 percent off their original list price. Everything in the Borders store was 50, 60 or 70 percent off the original list price, except for bargain books, which were 50 percent off the sticker price. Everything was being sold from books, to shelves to used file folders.

I did not see lots of fantastic deals, but that is probably because I rarely, if ever, buy books at full price. I will admit it, I have not brought much money to Borders since my college years. In fact, while I have spent $30 in Borders bucks each year, I have probably spent less than $15 out of pocket at my local Borders stores ever year. I usually see myself as a book rescuer more than a book buyer, as I purchase the best books on the clearance shelves, and pick up lots of books at the thrift store that needs a new home.
But I had my husband’s $15 Borders bucks with me, and since he does not have time to read much, I decided to look for some good reads for myself. These days I am usually busy reading books for reviews, but once in a while I am out of books, and I don’t like it. I do not have a lot of time to read between the three boys, my own writing, blogging, cooking, shopping, housekeeping etc., but I do try to have a book with me, when I pick up and drop off kids at school, as my youngest son is usually asleep in his stroller by the time we get to my oldest son’s school. I also like to read, while I am riding my exercise bike, and the multi-tasking makes the time exercising go faster, while I do not feel guilty about having my head buried in a book.
So I scoured the bookshelves with three boys in tow. My oldest son found a spot near me to sit with a book, and the two youngest ones stayed within my reach. Looking for a good book sure is different, when you have to have your eyes on three busy boys.
I did pick up five fiction books at Borders – four hard covers and one paperback.

While I have not been a big Borders spender, I have loved being able to use my Borders rewards from Erewards, and I always love browsing the bookshelves at Borders. I am very sad to see Borders leave my area.
