Question of the Week
Question of the week: Have you or your children ever broken any bones?
I spent last night at the Emergency Room together with my five-year-old high flying daredevil. We had spent a “frugal” afternoon at a local playground, when he fell from the monkey bars. My five-year-old is quite short for his age, and has actually been banned from the monkey bars, because it is so far to fall for him. I have three boys, and I will admit it that I sometimes get dizzy from an afternoon at the playground, because I only have two eyes but I have three busy boys (8, 5 and 20 months).
Anyway, my youngest son fell, and I went to pick him up and give him some water, which meant I had my back toward my five-year old son. I heard the scream, and I immediately knew what had happened. He fell from the monkey bars onto his right arm, and he was definitely hurt. I have never had a broken bone, and neither have my kids, so I have no experience with broken bones. My husband picked us up, checked out our son and said he would be fine. When my husband got home from work later Saturday night, he checked out my son’s arm again and after way too much poking, he finally declared that we needed to go to the ER. I felt like such a bad mom, because I could not make the judgment myself, but we boarded all the kids in the car, and fortunately the ER is only a few miles away. It seemed like a slow night at the ER, we got his X rays taken in no time, and sure enough it was fractured. Then someone came in with a dog bite, another person came in with quite a police escort, and all of sudden the place turned into pure craziness. Since my son was ok, we of course got last priorirty, and we did not leave until 5 a.m.
My brave little daredevil has a temporary sling for now, but fortunately it was a minor fracture on the right forearm, and his elbow is perfectly fine. It could have been so much worse, and I am just thankful that it wasn’t. I have to say though that going to the ER with him was nerve wrecking until he finally saw a doctor, and I knew that he was in the right hands.
