Starting a blog is extremely easy, and for that very reason there are millions of blogs in the blogosphere. However, starting a blog that is successful and a blog that will make money takes time, effort and focus, and while it is time consuming it is absolutely possible to create a successful blog. In this first blogging tips post, I am going to explain how to start a blog in a simple and inexpensive way.
How To Start A Blog
Before you set up a blog, there are several factors that you need to consider.
- Blog Focus
- Blog Name
- Blog Reach
The most successful blogs have a specific focus, and while it is possible to have a broad focus and be successful, it is still best if your blog has a main theme. When you consider what your blog focus is going to be, make sure that it is a topic that you love talking about. If you blog about something you love, you are less likely to ever run out of topics to blog about. If you blog about something you love, your writing will also seem less contrived, and you will be able to get a connection with your readers.
Blogging themes can be anything from frugality, coupons, crafts, decorating, books, cooking, parenting, reviews, entertainment, music, travel and much much more.
Your blog name is an extremely important part of your blogging success, as a good and relevant blog name will help your blog place better with the search engines. A part of blogging success is SEO keyword use, and while you do not need to be an SEO expert to blog, there are several SEO tips that will help your blog become successful. I will write more about SEO in another blogging tips post, but for now I just want to touch base on the blog name keyword importance.
If your blog is about parenting, it would be great to have the word parenting in your title. If your blog is about books, make sure the blog name has the word book or books in it.
Use the Google Adwords Keywords Tool to ensure that you are using the best words) in your blog title. It is amazing what a difference a small s can make.
Lets use the example of the word book.
Book receives 3,080,000,000 monthly searches
Books receive 124,000,000 monthly searches
Book reviews 1,830,000 monthly searches
Now, if you are writing about book reviews, it would still be better to have Book Reviews in your title than just the word book, as book reviews is more relevant to your blog content, and you will likely be using the keyword book reviews more than just the word book.
Blog Naming Tips
- Use relevant keywords in your blog title
- Google your potential blog title to make sure that it is not already taken.
- Make sure your blog title is memorable
- Make your blog title short and simple, as a long blog title will be difficult to remember. 2 – 3 words are good, 4 words makes it long, and at five words your blog name starts losing strength.
- Avoid using hyphens, as it will make the name less memorable, and harder for others to share verbally.
Consider your audience. If a potential reader was looking for a blog post with your topic, what would they search for? Make sure that your blog name is relevant to your theme and your audience.
How will you connect with other bloggers within your blog focus? Blog hops, link parties, blog carnivals etc. A successful blogger needs to create a connection to the blog readers, and unless you have a genuine interest in the topic, it will be difficult to do so.
After you have gone through the steps mentioned in this How To Start A Blog blogging tips post, take a day or two to play around with potential names. Write them down, say them out loud, share them with the people around you to get their feedback, and once you are ready go to start your blog.
Start your blog at blogger.com, it is easy to set up a new blog, just follow the steps as outlined.
Starting a blog in blogger is free, but I can highly recommend buying your own domain name and losing the blogspot. This will be the topic of another blogging tips post, but for now the How To Start A Blog tips should get you started. Please feel free to ask any questions in the comment area.
