Once you have learned how to start a blog, I highly recommend that you look into buying  your own domain name. For a $10 annual fee, you will be able to remove the blogspot in your blog name, you will be able to transfer your blog, and your blog name will be much more memorable. Learn how to make your own domain name.

As a new blogger you might ask yourself whether the $10 investment is necessary, but if you blog consistently and follow the tips that I will share with you later on in this blogging tips series, you will soon be able to earn your investment back and more.

Why Should I Make My Own Domain?
It took me a year before I transferred my first blog to its own domain name, and I sure wish I had done it from the beginning. Why? When I transferred my blog, I lost my Google PR Rank, and I just got it back this past month, when Google finally updated their PR rank system. I still have one blog with the blogspot address, and I surely wish I had changed it to it’s own domain from the beginning.

Why should you make your own domain name when you first start blogging?
  • When you get a new domain name for your existing blog, you will loose your PR Rank.
  • Transferring years of blog posts is nerve wrecking, so it is better to do it at the beginning.
  • It will prevent confusion with your readers.
  • If you ever need to change your blog host, your domain will go with you. (such as transferring from blogger to wordpress etc.)
  • Whether you are using your blog name to promote your business, to get advertising or to do product reviews, having your own domain name will give you a greater credibility.

How To Make Your Own Domain Name
Getting your own domain name is very easy, although it can be a bit unnerving. See my How To Start A Blog post for tips on creating a good blog or website name.
  1. In your blogspot blog, go to the SETTING
  2. Go to the PUBLISHING tab
  3. Click switch CUSTOM DOMAIN
  4. Type in your desired blog domain address and check for availability
  5. If your desired domain name is available, click CONTINUE TO REGISTRATION
  6. Fill out the registration information
  7. Continue the registration process
  8. Make sure to check automatic renewal (you can always go back and cancel)
  9. Once you have gone through the registration and payment process, return to the PUBLLISHING tab in your blogger account.
  10. Click redirect “your old blog address” to your “new blog address”.
After you go through the above steps of how to make your own domain, it will take a couple of days before your blog will be back to normal. Don’t worry, panic is highly normal at this stage.
It will take a little time (minutes to hours) before your new domain name shows up, and then you will be transferred from your old blog address to your new blog address automatically. You may temporarily loose the Google Friend widget, your blog comments and the ability to edit your blog directly from your homepage (you will have to go through the dashboard to make any edits).
Your labels will also slowly be transferred to your new domain, but for a while your label navigation system might be a mess.

Your blog will be transferred fully to your new domain address within 2 – 3 days, and any visitors to your old blog address will automatically be transferred to your new blog address.

How To Renew Your Domain Name or Cancel It
After a year, you will receive an email from Google Apps letting you know that your blog domain is up for renewal. Make sure that the credit card you originally used to sign up your domain name is still valid, this is the only thing you need to do. Otherwise the automatic domain renewal process is smooth and unnoticeable.

How To Disable Automatic Domain Renewal
If you do not want to renew your domain name, you can easily disable the automatic renewal for your domain registration,.

  1. Log in to your control panel
  2. Click Domain settings.
  3. Click Domain names.
  4. Uncheck the box next to Automatically renew my domain registration every year.
  5. Click Save changes.
When you make your own domain name through blogger (Google) this is what you get:
One year domain registration for $10
• Private domain registration to protect against spam at no extra cost
• Full DNS control and domain management
• Automatically configured to work with Google services
• Email, calendar, instant messaging, web pages and more also at no extra charge
