This morning I had a yard sale, as I needed to declutter the house and our storage room. I actually tried giving away a boys bike (see photo) on Freecycle for free….with no takers, which is what really led me to have the yard sale.
The boys helped me making signs last night, and I got up at 7 a.m. to put the signs up at the major streets around our neighborhood. I put from 8 a.m. to noon on the signs, but at 11 a.m. I packed up the leftovers, because my boys were beginning to fight with each other inside the house. I had my toddler sitting outside with me in his high chair once in a while, but I did not want the big boys outside, as the yard sale has a way of getting busy very fast. Last year I got rid of all the worn and unwanted kids clothes, because someone came and bought everything to send to Haiti for a local charity. This meant that I only had a few pieces of kids clothes to get rid off this year, but I did sell a little.
I practically gave the bike away. It was rusty, but it worked and my oldest son had had a lot of fun with it. I charged $3 for it, and it definitely got a new loving home. I also basically gave away a very old sewing machine for $5, but I just wanted someone to have it, who could actually use it. After the freecycle disaster, I figured I would just sell it so low that someone would actually take it.
The biggest surprise was someone who wanted to buy my trees. I let him have an avocado and mango tree (without pots), and then two small plants, but then I had to say stop, because I wanted to keep some for myself.
Considering the limited amount of things that I had out for the yard sale, I would say it was a success, but I did not earn as much as last year. One of her neighbors came over with a few nick knacks to sell, but she only earned $2.
There were lots of customers, and I was surprised to see that several of them were repeaters from last year. Having a yard sale was less stressful this year, as I knew what I was doing, and I kept my boys inside. The best part is that I now have a little room again, and that I got rid of an old bike, an old sewing machine and an old umbrella stroller, all things that were taking up a lot of room, and that we no longer had a need for.
Just like last year I say never again, but I am sure that by this time next year I am ready to do another round of decluttering. After all, it is a great way to get motivated to go through the kids clothes, toys, books etc.
How often do you have yard sales?
