My kids and I have lots of Caldecott honor book favorites, so I was very excited to discover that Scholastic was releasing a new Caldecott DVD. The Scholastic Storybook Treasures Caldecott Favorites DVD collection is full of some fantastic award winning stories from authors such as Ezra Jack Keats, Hans Christian Andersen and Marjorie Flack.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, and it is awarded annually by the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. This is a prestigious award that is given only to the best of the best, and in my experience you can never go wrong with picking up a Caldecott Medal book.

The Scholastic Storybook Treasures Caldecott Favorites DVD collection consists of three separate DVDs with a total of 20 stories. The stories are timeless adaptations of some of the 20th Century’s most loved children’s classics. This collection will be released in stores on November 22nd, but you can already purchase this collection online at the Scholastic Storybook Treasures website.

The collection includes three DVDS with a total of 3 hours and 19 minutes of stories.

Scholastic never ceases to amaze me, because somehow the Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs are always able to bring my kids’ favorite books to life without compromising on the integrity of the storyline or the nature of the original illustrations.

My five-year-old son is especially a fan of the Ezra Jack Keats DVD, and he was in fact amazed to see that the entire DVD contained a total of seven Ezra Jack Keats stories including The Snowy Day, winner of the Caldecott Medal. A few weeks ago my son brought his Danish version of Peter’s Chair “Peter’s Stol” to school with him to show it off to his teacher, as they had read Peter’s Chair in class. So, when my son discovered that the second story on the Ezra Jack Keats was Peter’s Chair he was very excited, and he could not wait to tell his teacher.

The Snowy Day is a children’s book from 1962 that broke the color barrier in children’s publishing, with the story of the young African American boy Peter, and the pure joy he experiences on a snowy day. The Scholastic Storybook Treasures Caldecott Favorites dvd collection also includes a bonus version of A Snowy Day in Spanish.

My personal favorite from all of the stories is The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen, as this was a story I grew up with. My oldest son likes the Antarctic Antics by Judy Sierra, and my youngest son loves Bark, George.
