I am not afraid to admit it, I love to shop. I honestly feel like I am shopping all the time, and I am sure that everyone else in my family feels the same way. I love the thrill of finding a great deal though, and I find great pride in being able to keep everyone in my family well dressed on a very frugal budget. I did spend money on clothing at Target as well, but I have included all 2011 Target spending in my 2011 grocery savings tally.
I am able to keep my family’s clothing and shoe expenses low, because of several factors.
- I shop ahead, and I shop out of season.
- I shop clearance
- I use coupons
My family of five includes three boys ages 2, 5 and 9, and I am sure that I would have spent much more money on clothing, if I had any girls to dress.
I have a very elaborate clothing storage system, and clothing is handed down as long as it is in neat condition. After years of frugal shopping, I have learned which clothing will last through three kids, and which clothes will be too worn after one child. Once a year I have a yard sale, where I go through everyone’s clothes, and anything that is not sold is either donated or freecycled.
This past year I spent a total of 273.81 on clothing and shoes for everyone in my family, and I saved a total of $1732!
