My family has Indian and Jamaican roots, so we eat a lot of rice every week. After several attempts of switching to brown rice, we always ended back with regular rice, simply because we had a difficult time getting used to the different taste of brown rice. We have already switched to whole wheat bread only, and I really wanted to make the switch to whole grain brown rice as well.
Then I discovered that there is a way to cook brown rice so that no one in my family knows the difference, and for this the Uncle Ben’s Whole Grain Brown Rice are perfect. If I mix the brown rice with beans, corn or other veggies no one seems to notice the difference between regular rice and whole grain brown rice – not even me.
This is my family’s favorite whole grain rice recipe.

Whole Grain Rice With Corn & Beans
1 1/2 cup of rice
3 cups of water
1 teaspoon butter
salt to taste
1 can of black beans
1 can of corn (rinsed)

  1. Soak the rice in water for 3 minutes to get rid of some of the starch
  2. Put the water to boil with the butter and salt
  3. Once the water boils add the rice, beans and corn.
  4. Continue simmering over low heat for about 20  – 30 minutes, or until all water is absorbed.
Serve the Uncle Ben’s Whole Grain Brown Rice with corn and black beans with your favorite protein.
By combining the whole grain brown rice from Uncle Ben’s with black beans and rice, I managed to transform it into a great-tasting meal that everyone enjoyed without realizing that they were eating brown rice.
