Fit Moms for Life is a mix of health tips as well as transformational stories from moms just like me, who have successfully incorporated Maher’s tips and advice into their daily routines.
If you have ever felt as if you were burning up from the responsibilities and needs of motherhood, then Fit Moms for Life is for you.
Maher’s focus on moms is based on the five pillars of health: mindset, nutrition, strength training, burst training, and environment. I especially took an interest in his emphasis on burst training (similar to interval training), because burst training is a way for moms to do more with less time.
When Dustin Maher says “Put yourself first”, he does not mean changing the instincts of motherhood, what he does mean is that you need to give yourself 30 – 45 minutes a day to take care of yourself. This is something I have been working on, and I agree with him that the benefits are amazing.
For the past six years, I have always had at least one child at home all day, and I found it difficult to dedicate this time to myself, but as I have grown older, I have realized that it is better for my children, if I take this time to take care of myself. I no longer feel guilty over putting on my son’s favorite television show for 45 minutes, while I go in the next room to exercise. I know that he is better off with a fit and happy mom, and this can only be achieved if I get my exercise routine done.
In Fit Moms for Life, Maher focuses a great deal on mindset, and he reminds moms like myself that change is possible. Setting good goals is one of the ways in which, Maher believes moms can stay on track. He believes that goals need to be measurable, and in his book he has a chart, where moms can write out their goals to help stay motivated.
Throughout Fit Moms for Life, Maher tells the story of 31 women, who have indeed followed Maher’s Fit Moms for Life approach successfully. They each share their story, their transformation, and tips on getting and staying healthy.
One of the tips that I found of great interest in Fit Mom for Life is that Maher suggest a woman should stay at 1500 calories per day to loose weight, while she should stay within the 1500 – 2000 calorie range, if she just wants to maintain her current weight without gaining any pounds. He also emphasizes that no woman should go below 1200 calories per day, because this will will slow down your metabolism.
I also love Maher’s rules to eat by such as “Don’t eat carbs alone,” “avoid fake sugars,” and “don’t eat grains after 4 p.m.” These are only a few of Maher’s 16 rules to eat by, but there are many more great rules to follow.
Maher’s Fit Moms for Life approach is mostly tailored toward working out at home, but he also gives tips on how to find the right gym that fits your needs.
As a mom of three, I find that most of Maher’s tips, advice and suggestions are durable for busy moms, but it does take a concerted effort for everyone in the family to make the program a success. It is possible to make small changes that go a long way though, and as my husband has discovered, a happy wife does indeed make a happy life.
