With my youngest son’s third birthday coming up, I have been looking for the perfect birthday gift for a toddler. The Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber is a perfect match, because it encourages independent play and activity.
Since my family lives in South Florida, it is very important for us to have shade. While we are fortunate to have a beautiful mango tree in the back yard, which helps keep the temperatures low, the mornings are still pretty sunny in our backyard. The canopy that comes with the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber, is just what we needed, and it actually do provide some shade, when my son is playing in the sandbox. Of course, it depends on what tiime of the day it is, but I have learned that by moving the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber a little, it is easy to find the perfect spot.
My kids love the sandbox, and we use it both as a sandbox and as a habor for the boats. The Step2 instructions clearly state that it is not a pool, but it still works great with a little bit of water for the boys’ boats. On a hot spring and summer day, my boys just need a bucket of water and they can have a blast for hours. I love the fact that the sandbox comes with a lid, because with all of our neighborhood cats a sandbox lid is highly necessary.
The Assembly:
I set up the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber together with my toddler, and it took us about 35 minutes to get every piece screwed together. I am always impressed with how simple the Step2 instructions are, and the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber instructions were no exception. Complete with clear instructions and photos, it was easy for us to set up everything by ourselves. 
The only problem that we encountered was, when we were going to attach the steering wheel to the boat part, because the part where we needed to attach the screws kept on falling out. The solution was simple though, because we just had to put the boat upright to prevent the part from falling out, and with the help of gravity putting together the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber was a breeze from then on.
I appreciate that the packaging is minimal, and there were no excessive wrapping. Still, the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber arrived at our doorstep unharmed, and we did not have a lot of wrapping to throw away afterward. The kids turned the boxes into a temporary rabbit gym, so even the boxes provided entertainmnet.

The details on the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber are phenomenal with anchors and boat rope, and I just love the nautical look of the vertical striped blue and white canopy. This climbing set is colorful without being an eyesore in the backyard, because the subdued color scheme blends in easily, which is an extra bonus. This entire Step2 ensemble fits perfectly into our backyard, as my boys are beach boys headed for the beach at least once a week. In between the backyard will have to do, and when we do not have the pools out, the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber is a perfect way to keep everyone happy, active and playing together.

The Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber is recommended for children ages 1 1/2 – 5 years old, and should be used by a maximum of three children at the time. With three boys in the house, a toy that can be used by more than one child at the same time is a big plus. It also makes playdates easier, because there are plenty to do for everyone without any wait time. In addition to my own boys testing out the sturdiness of the Step2 Dockside Sandbox and Climber, we have also had neighborhood kids come to play, and they all agree that this is one awesome sandbox and climber.
