Finding appropriate music for tween boys that they actually like can be rather difficult, but Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has created the solution.  At first glance Make Believers by Secret Agent 23 Skidoo seems a little confused, but after listening to a few of the songs, the purpose behind the madness emerges little by little. With about 40 guest artists and a mix of musical genres from hip hop, to R&B and even salsa rythms, there is a surprise around every turn on Make Believers.

Time Out New York Kids magazine just named Secret Agent 23 Skidoo one of America’s top 10 Best Bands for Kids, and it is a well-deserved honor. The genius about Make Believers really is the lyrics, as the lyrics have a bit of a tween twist to them. Magic Beans and Hi-5-For The Hi-Dive is full of hip hop rythms with lyrics that tweens can relate to, but even younger kids will enjoy this CD and parents will too.

As a mother I love Nightmares Disappear, which starts out slowly and you just want to take the little ones and dance around in the living room. The slow pace continues throughout the song, but then Secret Agent 23 Skidoo breaks into the ballad with his hip hop beat and lyrics.

Another one of my favorites is Make The Future, because the lyrics have a great message, and Secret Agent Skidoo delivers the message in a rapping way that will make even tween boys listen. Make The Future celebrates ambition and wanting to make a difference, and the song encourages kids to be active in shaping the future instead of just letting it pass them by.

My nine-year-old son especially likes Gotta Be You, which is all about being your own friend and handling bullying. Another one of his favorites is Magic Beans with the hip hop spin on a classic children’s story.

Make Believers by Secret Agent Skidoo is an album with many layers, and while it is easy to just brush it off as just another kids music CD trying to be grown up, it has a sophistication that should be celebrated. Peel back the layers one after one, and you will find special messages, phenomenal rythms and lyrical complexity.
