I love kitchen gadgets, and my kids love it, whenever I make goodies, so I knew that the mini donut maker from Nostalgia Electrics would be a great fit with our frugal family. The Mini Donut Maker Kit from Nostalgia Electrics come with a mini donut maker, a fashionable storage box, a donut holder and a sprinkle container. It also comes with a small handbook, which includes simple to follow instructions as well as several donut recipes.
Figuring out exactly how much batter to use, as well as how long to bake the mini donuts took a couple of batches. It turned out that they did not need to cook as long as instructed, and our mini donuts only needed about 2 1/2 minutes of baking time or they ended up getting burned.
The donut recipes are for cake donuts, and they do taste more like cake than actual donuts. It is also suggested that you can use regular cake mixes, which will make them look like donuts but again taste like cake. My kids did not complain though, and the donuts were done in a few days. We tried decorating the mini donuts in different ways including with vanilla icing, chocolate icing and real chocolate. The preference was definitely for the real chocolate covered donuts, but again all donuts vanished rather quickly.
The kids had a lot of fun helping with decorating, and we decided to try to stick to a holiday theme.
A few days after trying the donut recipes in the instructions booklet, I decided to try a different donut recipe, which sounded promising. I also decided to make up my own donut recipe, and so I pulled out the mini donut maker again.
The first batch of donuts was based on a mini muffin recipe, and it turned out good, but it was a bit too sweet and buttery for my taste. The kids loved this cake donut though, and they were big fans of the cinnamon sugar crust.

The consistency was also again very cake like, so in my own recipe I made a several adjustments including more flour, baking powder etc. My own homemade donut recipe turned out to be the one that was most donuty, with a thick and sticky batter. It became a dense yet airy donut, and the combination of brown sugar, vanilla and nutmeg turned out to be great.
What I Love About The Mini Donut Maker From Nostalgia Electrics:
- It bakes quickly – 2 minutes baking time
- It makes great-tasting donuts
- It eliminates the need for frying
- You can make both cake donuts and regular donuts
- The mini donut maker is easy and quick to set up
- The donut maker is easy to clean
Cons About The Mini Donut Maker From Nostalgia Electrics:
- Burns very easily, so keep a careful eye.
- The donuts are done in 2-3 minutes, and not 5 minutes like the included recipe booklet states
- The donut recipes included in the recipe booklet are for cake donuts
