Homemade DonutsAfter having tried several donut recipes with our new mini donut maker from Nostalgia Electrics, I was not ecstatic with the results. This is why I decided to try and make up my own donut recipe, which would take into considerations the cake consistency of the previous recipes that I had tried. I based my own donut recipe on this donut recipe from Allrecipes.

Donut Recipe: (Makes 30 mini donuts)

  • 1/2 Cup of Butter
  • 1/2 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Nutmeg
  • 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 Cup of Buttermilk
  • 2 Cups of Flour
  • 2 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Salt

Glaze:

  • 2 Cups of Powdered Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
  • 2+ Tablespoons of Water as needed
  • Add 2 drops of food coloring if desired

Donut Directions:

  1. Mix sugars and butter
  2. Add vanilla and nutmeg
  3. Mix in egg and add buttermilk
  4. Add flour, baking powder and salt
  5. Grease the mini donut baker slightly with vegetable oil
  6. Warm up the donut maker
  7. Add a small scoop of batter to each donut form, making sure that nothing goes outside of the donut form.
  8. Bake for 2 – 2 1/2 minutes
  9. Remove from the mini donut maker with a wooden or plastic spoon
  10. Turn the donuts in the glaze and sprinkle immediately if desired.

These mini donuts turned out to be the most donut like of all for donut recipes that I have tried with our new mini donut maker, and they are a special Halloween treat for the boys. We also had our neighbor taste test the different donuts, and my own donut recipe was the one that one the “most donut” taste test.

I used ALDI ingredients, which ended up making this donut recipe a very frugal recipe. Our homemade donuts taste delicious, and they will make great treats for whenever we have guests over.
