Nelly Furtado released her new album The Spirit Indestructible last month, and it shows clear signs of a mature artist with her own style. The Spirit Indestructible spans several musical genres, and in between pop songs and dance rhythms there are hints of reggae, hip hop as well as a bit of funk.
I first remember Nelly Furtado from her debut album with songs like I’m Like a Bird and Turn Off The Light, which were big hits back in my clubbing days. Now, as a mother of three I can still listen to Nelly Furtado with the same enthusiasm, because Furtado has developed far beyond her original pop hits to a more sophisticated yet still intriguing and unique music style.
The Spirit Indestructible is Furtado’s fifth album, and the album is full of spirituality as well as a bit nostalgia. Nelly says “”All of these songs have incredible meaning to me and were written in moments of intense personal growth. I…found a new freedom within my voice and an overwhelming sense of excitement about making pop music.”
I had a difficult time choosing a favorite single on The Spirit Indestructible, because there are so many good songs, and each one of them is unique in its very own way. The single Spirit Indestructible immediately makes me want to dance, Miracles is very spiritual, and Believers is full of encouragement and emotion.
There is something mesmerizing about track number 14 End of the World, and it is almost impossible not to sing along. Fill with emotions, a memorable chorus and a great melody, End of the World is destined to be a hit.
Nelly Furtado describes the inspiration for Parking Lot as “good times in my hometown, sort of like my own take on ‘Summer Of 69′.” Parking Lot was directed by Ray Kay (Lady Gaga, Beyoncé), and you can see the video below.
