ALDI Fruit

With an empty fruit bowl in the house, I was eager to make my way to ALDI this morning. Thanks to ALDI’s low prices on fruit and vegetables, our family is eating more fruits and veggies and ever, and I am so thankful that ALDI made its way to South Florida a few years ago. Before that I was finding it very difficult to fit fruit into our very small grocery budget, and I was longing for a good farmer’s market.

This week our Florida ALDI store has Florida strawberries for $1.49, blueberries for $1.39, blackberries for $0.99, cantaloupe for $1.19 and 4 lbs of sweet oranges for $1.99. I went a little fruit crazy, because I know that we will make our way through the berries in no time, and with all the lingering colds and fear of flu season, we go through a lot of oranges as well.

My 10-year-old son loves the sweet snack peppers, and since I would much rather have him snacking on peppers than cookies and sweets, I am more than happy to pay a little extra for this treat.

Since I spent almost $50 at ALDI, it is going to be a challenge staying within our $65 grocery budget this week. I will definitely have to use lots of coupons at Publix, and I am still considering whether we should  raise budget to $70 a week, now that we are about to become a family of 6.

How much do you usually spend on fruit and veggies every week?

  1. I am so jealous. Fruits and veggies aren’t all that great around here at this time of year, and they tend to be pretty pricey. So we eat a whole lot more frozen and canned veggies and fruit during the winter.

I’m not sure how much of our budget is usually spent on fruits and veggies. It varies greatly. During the summer, we tend to eat a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, but during the winter, I sometimes have to push and/or get creative to get Elliott eat just 5 or 6 (1/2 cup) servings of fruits and veggies daily.

    • Carla, before ALDI came to S. FL, I really had a difficult time getting enough fruits for all of us, and yes we ate a lot more frozen veggies as well. It is great to have gotten some competition down here to our regular grocery stores. Before I became “too” pregnant, I also did a lot of produce price matching at Walmart, which helped out a lot. These days it is just too much walking to get to Walmart, but I am sure that I will be back to price matching again once the little one is here.

  2. Here in NC the strawberries are 1.69. They are pretty good for this time of year.
