Frugality Is Free Disclaimer review only

OctaviaOctavia and Her Purple Ink Cloud is a cute and educational story about Octavia Octapus, who lives in a secret cave in a coral reef. Through a game called “how to hide from a hungry creature”, she teaches kids how different animals use different tactics to escape harm from predators.

In addition to teaching kids about ocean animals, the book Octavia also teaches kids about colors. While Octavia is trying to show the other ocean animals how she can squirt purple ink, she ends up squirting out ink in different colors.

My three-year-old son loved this book by Donna and Doreen Rathmell, and he carefully studied each of Connie McLennan’s colorful and detailed illustrations. He has had a difficult time learning the colors, so this was the perfect book for him.

My seven-year-old son thought Octavia was an easy read, and he had a particular interest in the For Creative Minds section in the back of the book, which teahces and quizzes children about animal camouflage, protection and adaptions.

  1. My grandson would love this book. He is just starting to read also this year, alone and he loves his books. All my grandchildren have many books and we will continue to read to them regularly, so important.

  2. This sounds like a great book that my younger granddaughter can read and will learn about Octopus’s habits, life and how they survive and the use of their ink. I thnk this would be a great read thank you

  4. The cover illustration on this book is beautiful. It made me go on the hunt to see if I could find more of what is inside, but I was not successful. I love that this book teaches about animals & the ways they can hide from predators based on their size, shape, texture & colors. My grandchildren would love to have this on the bookshelf.

  5. I love children’s books that TEACH, but are so much fun to read that my children don’t even know that they are learning! And, the length of the book is also important…. my children automatically “close up” when I bring out a “thick” book…. this one seems perfect… a fun story that they can enjoy while learning about their colors!

  6. What a wonderful book. I love that it has a section in the back to quiz and discuss its contents.

  7. This sounds like a book worth getting! I love finding good “living books” to teach my children about God’s creations.

  8. I love when books have animals stories, especially for my daughter. She is 4 and loves to learn anything about animals. Most of the time she is a horse, a dog, cat or a camel. She know her colors but loves to reiterate things that she already knows. These books look really cute. I’m sure she would love reading them.

  9. Looks like an engaging way to truly educate little ones. Everyone loves a story & when you make it non fiction based, they get real information in a fun way!

  11. This sounds like a great book to start reading to my great niece. Although she’s a bit too young yet, she can start to learn the colors 🙂

  12. I love this book, it teaches about other things in the ocean. We are trying to get books about nature and animals and such. She loves books and I’m amazed when a book is colorful and creative; her little brain just takes it all in and spills it out with her friends, & family. We love her books but some she picks out and we donate to our local shelter so other little ones can enjoy. Sylvan Dell has so many great books, we’ve never been disappointed with any of their material.

  13. Grand daughter would love to read this, especially after we take her to the aquarium. Thanks for the review.
