The Frugality Is Free family recently received VIP status at our favorite online consignment store, and to celebrate we want to give all of you $15 to shop for free at the store. (This offer expires February 28th, so get your $15 now – after that it is $10) It is no secret that we love ThredUp, because thanks to ThredUp we have been able to dress our little girl in fashionable style on a very small budget.
Let me just say that shopping at ThredUp should come with a warning – “Beware, ThredUp shopping is addictive!” I can spend hours and hours looking through the ThredUp clothing collection, before I end up picking 10 – 15 favorite pieces, which will get me over the free shipping threshold.
With three boys and 1 girl in the family, we do a lot of clearance shopping at the local malls plus online, and quite often we can find great deals especially, when we combine clearance with coupons and sales. Our boys are actually quite well dressed, simply because of our shopping techniques and some giveaway wins, but when it comes to little girl’s dresses, I find it difficult to find great prices in the stores. Especially, since I do not want to settle for anything less than beautiful, when it comes to dressing our little girl.
I have found that even on clearance with coupons, a baby or little girl dress costs around $10, and the full price for a quality dress can easily be between $25 and $50. This is why ThredUp has become my favorite place to shop for dresses, because for the price of 1 or 2 dresses at the store, I can get 10 – 15 dresses. Not only that, but the dresses at ThredUp are often from high-end brands with extremely high quality clothes, and quite often you can hardly see that they have ever been worn. The truth is probably that most of the dresses that we buy on ThredUp have been worn less than a handful of times, but to find these dress you have to look very carefully. I do final inspections of each clothing piece, where I utilize the looking glass feature.
When it comes to boys clothes, I am not really excited about ThredUp. We only find something for the boys there on rare occasions, such as a pair of brand name jeans or shorts, a button-down shirt or a new-with-tag item. Today, I ended up splurging on a very nice button-down shirt for our youngest son. However, if it had not been for the ThredUp credit to cover part of it, I would not have put it in our cart.
ThredUp both sells and buys used clothing, but while we love to shop at ThredUp, our experience with selling to ThredUp has not been exceptional. What we’ve found is that ThredUp has very strict quality standards, and they will only accept a handful of what is in the bag we send. You only get paid for what ThredUp accepts, which means you end up getting paid very little per item. For us, reselling at a yard sale every two years, at Craigslist or simply giving the clothing away seems to be more fruitful. However, if you do not want to bother having to deal with hosting a yardsale or selling at Craigslist, ThredUp is easy to resell too. You simply request a bag (which is currently free), and then you fill it up, send it off for free, and voila you will in return receive credit or paypal payment for your used clothing (kids and women’s clothing).
Still, while we do not recommend selling to ThredUp, we highly recommend shopping at ThredUp. If you have a little girl in the family, ThredUp is especially a fantastic place to shop, and if you have name brand-loving tweens, you can also find great deals on the brands they want.
Another thing we love about ThredUp is the customer service. On the one occasion that we were not satisfied with the quality of two items we received, we simply sent ThredUp and email, and we received credit back in return. These items were school clothing that we had bought for a little girl we knew, and we wanted to give her great clothing to wear to school – thanks to ThredUp we were able to do just that.

We were able to find three new-with-tag items, and our favorite find was the jacket for our little girl. It will be perfect for our next South Florida winter.
