“Epic! It was epic!” That’s what our ten-year-old on said about the newly released movie Long Way North from Shout!Factory. Even our teenage son sat through the entirety of this animated movie directed by celebrated filmmaker and animator Rémi Chayé (The Secret of Kells) and produced by Sacrebleu Productions (Oscar®-nominated Madagascar, Carnet de Voyage), Maybe Movies (Oscar®-nominated Ernest & Celestine) and Norlum Studios (Oscar®-nominated Song of the Sea).
Long Way North is the story about Sascha, a young girl raised in the Russian aristocracy in the late 19th century Saint Petersburg. She is the granddaughter of Olukine, a scientist and arctic explorer, who has failed to return from his latest expedition to conquer the North Pole.
After several unsuccessful attempts to convince her family and the leaders of her country that she knows where her grandfather is, Sacha sets out to find him herself. Her journey takes her through unlikely paths and on dangerous adventures, as she heads toward the North in search of Oloukine and his lost ship the Davai.
The animation is different than what the kids usually watch on television, but it has been done beautifully, and we especially marveled at the details of the St. Petersburg scenes. It is a movie full of spirit and encouragement to never give up, and it teachers kids to listen to their intuition and that some things are worth fighting for.
Long Way North won the Audience Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, it is the winner of Grand Prize at the Tokyo Animation Festival, and it is an Annie Award nominee for Best Animated Feature-Independent.
Long Way North has received stellar reviews, and our kids are not the only ones marveling about this captivating animated movie.
