Cream puffs

Today is my dad’s birthday, and for the first time in many many years I am able to celebrate it with him, since he is here to visit. His girlfriend is making his favorite layered birthday cake, and I am making cream puffs with a cream puff filling recipe that I inherited from my mom.

Cream puffs (also known as profiterole and choux à la crème) is a dessert that intimidate many, but once you have made them the first time, you will surely be asked to make them again and again.… Read more

Frugal Baking: Savory Vegetable Bread

My kids have been requesting homemade soup for a while, so yesterday I spent all day long making soup. Making soup from scratch is a lot of work, especially since I need to make two soups – one with meat and one vegetarian soup. I had picked up a South American root vegetable at the farmer’s market ( I think it might be Jicama) as well as garlic and parsnips, so we had lots of different flavors in the soup in addition to chicken, potato, onion, carrot, chives, spinach and lots of different herbs.… Read more

Banana Chocolate Cupcakes

Banana Chocolate Cupcakes

Today is a cold day in South Florida, and with 61 degrees my boys are shivering. It was just a few days ago that we were having fun at the water park, and playing at the beach, so I am not complaining. Instead, I’ve bundled up the baby, found the long-sleeve shirts for the boys, and I am taking advantage of a cold day by turning it into baking day to heat up the house a bit.… Read more

Frugal Cooking: Easy Donut Recipe

Homemade DonutsAfter having tried several donut recipes with our new mini donut maker from Nostalgia Electrics, I was not ecstatic with the results. This is why I decided to try and make up my own donut recipe, which would take into considerations the cake consistency of the previous recipes that I had tried. I based my own donut recipe on this donut recipe from Allrecipes.… Read more

Frugal Baking: Banana Cake with Orange Zest

Ship CakeFor my husband’s birthday this year the kids and I decided to make him a banana cake with orange zest, and although I had an idea of making a very simple cake the kids insisted that we make him his usual ship cake. Of course with three boys I was quickly outvoted, and so we began. I adjusted my original banana bread recipe to fit the needed texture of this banana cake.… Read more

4th of July Cake

flag cake

My boys wanted to make a 4th of July cake, and as always I was up for the challenge. For our 4th of July cake, I used our favorite carrot cake recipe, because I had lots of carrots in the produce drawer. My boys love this carrot cake, and I love the fact that I can get my carrot-hating son eat carrots…even if it is in the shape of a cake. … Read more

Fruit Tarts With Homemade Pie Crust

Fruit Tarts

This afternoon I have been making fruit tarts with my youngest sons, as they were getting tired of everything being mango flavored. I am swimming in mangoes these days, as our backyard mango tree throws mangoes down several times a day at the moment. I usually hear a bump from the roof, or I hear a clunk from the backyard as the mangoes hit the lawn. … Read more
